Hooded eyelids
16.09.2026
“Hooded eyelids” can describe several different conditions: natural orbital anatomy, excess skin, brow descent or true eyelid ptosis. Treatment depends on the cause.
Natural anatomy
Some people naturally have a low eyelid crease and limited space between brow and lashes. Symmetrical, stable hooding is not necessarily a disorder.
Age-related change
Skin and supporting tissues lose elasticity, the brow may descend and excess skin can fold over the lashes. Brow position must be assessed before planning surgery.
What is true ptosis?
In ptosis, the eyelid margin itself drops and may cover part of the pupil. Sudden or one-sided ptosis, double vision or weakness requires urgent medical assessment.
When blepharoplasty helps
Upper blepharoplasty removes a measured amount of excess skin and may address selected deeper tissues. It does not automatically replace brow correction or ptosis repair.
FAQ
Can injections lift a hooded lid?
Only in limited situations; they do not remove skin and inappropriate placement can worsen brow or eyelid position temporarily.
Will eye shape change?
The usual goal is a lighter eyelid while preserving individual features.
When should an ophthalmologist assess me?
With visual symptoms, dryness, eyelid-margin asymmetry or suspected true ptosis.
This article is educational and does not replace an examination. The cause of a concern and the appropriate correction method are determined individually during consultation.
