Types of breast implants

An implant’s shape label does not determine the result by itself. Final contour depends on width, projection, gel behaviour, placement and the patient’s own tissues.
Round implants
They have a symmetrical base, so rotation does not alter orientation. Different profiles and gels may create a subtle or more pronounced upper pole.
Anatomical implants
A teardrop design carries less volume superiorly and more inferiorly. It can suit selected anatomy but requires precise pocket planning; rotation can distort the contour.
What “ergonomic” means
This is a design and marketing term for certain gel implants that change shape with body position. It is not a universal safety category or a guarantee of a natural result.
What matters beyond shape
- breast and implant base width;
- projection and volume;
- tissue thickness;
- surface and device-specific safety information;
- placement and skin quality.
Selection is part of planning breast augmentation. The FDA stresses that implants are not lifetime devices.
