Breast Ptosis: Degrees, Causes and Pseudoptosis
18.09.2026
Ptosis is descent of breast tissue relative to the inframammary fold. Size or upper-pole emptiness alone does not define it.
What the surgeon assesses
Nipple position, tissue below the fold, skin quality, volume and asymmetry all matter.
Pseudoptosis versus true ptosis
In pseudoptosis the nipple may remain above the fold while lower tissue descends. In true ptosis the nipple descends as well.
How correction is chosen
An implant may address volume loss, while tissue and nipple elevation requires mastopexy, with or without an implant.
FAQ
Does ptosis progress?
Ageing, pregnancy and weight fluctuation can increase it.
Does the grade determine the operation?
It helps, but tissue quality, scars and desired volume also guide planning.
