Compression Garments After Plastic Surgery

Статті Compression Garments After Plastic Surgery

A compression garment is part of a recovery plan, not a way to “squeeze harder so swelling disappears faster”. I select it for the operation, anatomy and stage of healing. A correct garment supports evenly; the wrong size or a fold can create focal pressure and skin injury.

Your discharge instructions take priority. Garment type, schedule and duration differ after liposculpture, abdominoplasty, breast and facial surgery.

Why compression may be prescribed

Purpose What a garment may do What it cannot do
Swelling Provide even external support Remove all fluid immediately
Comfort Limit uncomfortable tissue movement Explain or cure severe increasing pain
Contour Support the treated area while it heals Correct surgical technique or guarantee a result
Safety Reinforce a careful routine Replace walking or prescribed thrombosis prevention

Signs of a suitable fit

  • even contact without rolls or deep creases;
  • normal breathing and permitted movement;
  • edges do not cut into incisions, groin or armpit;
  • no increasing numbness, coldness or colour change;
  • fasteners close without force.

Gentle even pressure is expected. Sharp pain, throbbing, pale or blue skin, a cold limb, new numbness, blisters or marked breathlessness are not signs that compression is “working”.

How to put it on safely

  1. Prepare the correct dry garment and open every fastening.
  2. Dress while seated or with help if you may feel dizzy.
  3. Advance the fabric gradually instead of pulling one edge.
  4. Check that dressings and drains have not shifted or kinked.
  5. Smooth every fold, especially over incisions and bony points.
  6. Recheck the skin after 15–30 minutes and throughout the day.

The schedule depends on the procedure

Procedure Typical support area What changes the plan
Liposuction / VASER Abdomen, flanks, thighs or another treated zone Extent, swelling, skin and drains
Abdominoplasty Abdomen and flanks Muscle repair, incision and breathing comfort
Breast surgery Postoperative bra Operation type, implant position and tissues
Chin / neck Facial support Extent, skin and surgeon’s protocol

Do not borrow a timeline from an online forum. For related guidance, see abdominoplasty recovery and VASER for abdomen and flanks.

Washing, showering and a spare garment

If removal for showering is allowed, keep the break brief. A second garment lets one dry while the other is worn. Follow the manufacturer’s wash temperature, avoid irritating fragrances and never put on damp fabric.

Do not add pads, foam, boards or extra belts unless prescribed. They alter pressure distribution and may injure the skin.

Common mistakes

  • choosing a smaller size “for later”;
  • tolerating numbness or sharp pain;
  • leaving twists and creases;
  • adding several compression layers yourself;
  • stopping abruptly after one comfortable day;
  • wearing a wet or soiled garment;
  • assuming compression permits an early return to exercise.

When to contact the team

Call the clinic for new blisters, marked rubbing, asymmetric swelling, colour change, increasing pain, wound discharge or sudden excessive tightness. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or one-sided leg pain and swelling require emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Is tighter better?

No. The goal is controlled, even support—not maximum pressure.

May I sleep without it?

Only if your protocol allows it. Some garments are worn day and night with short breaks; other operations require a different plan.

When should I move to a smaller size?

After review or clear instruction. Less swelling does not automatically mean the tissues need stronger compression.

Can sportswear replace a medical garment?

Not without approval: seams, cut, closures and support may be unsuitable for the surgical area.

Key point

Good compression means the right product, an even fit, clean dry fabric and a personal schedule. It should support recovery, not create new symptoms.
